How to Steam Clean a Microwave

It’s late, you had a busy day at work, and you are tired. So you decide to heat the leftover tomato and basil pasta and enjoy a relaxed dinner while watching TV.

But then you hear it: the food is blowing up inside the microwave, covering everything in sauce. The simple thought of having to scrub that mess destroys your appetite.

What if we told you that you don’t have to do it. There are other better ways of cleaning the microwave, no scrubbing included – only the power of steam.

Here are two life hacks that will save you time and your sanity.

Use Steam and Vinegar

If there’s one item that mustn’t miss from any kitchen, then that’s vinegar. It a cleaner, sanitizer, and deodorant all in one. So, obviously, this old kitchen staple can help you clean your microwave too

Here’s what you will need:

  • One cup of white vinegar
  • One cup of water
  • One wooden spoon
  • One sponge
  • One measuring cup.

Here’s how long this method will take:

  • 5-10 minutes of waiting around for the steam to form;
  • 2 minutes of actual cleaning.

Here’s how to do it:

  • Take a measuring bowl and pour one cup of vinegar and one cup of water. Mix it with a wooden spoon and leave the spoon inside the bowl. Place the bowl with the spoon inside the microwave. This trick will ensure that the mixture won’t heat up too much and explode. It’s rare, but it could happen.
  • Set the microwave to 5-10 minutes – it all depends on how powerful your microwave is.
  • Use an oven mitt to remove the bowl from the microwave.
  • Use a sponge to clean the inside of the microwave. The dirt has now loosened up from the steam, so you just need to wipe the interior a bit to get the stains out.

Use Steam and Lemon Oil

Steam Clean a Microwave

We know that some people can’t stand the smell of vinegar, so we’ve included a different hack that is just as easy and effective, minus the smell.

Here’s what you will need:

  • 2 ounces of water
  • A sponge
  • A spray bottle
  • Lemon oil

Here’s how to do it:

  • Wet the sponge and place it inside the microwave. The more soaked it is, the better.
  • Pour the water in the spray bottle and add a few drops of lemon essential oil. Make it as fragrant or subtle as you want.
  • Spray the inside of the microwave. Make sure not to miss any spot.
  • Set the microwave for two minutes and wait. Don’t hurry to start cleaning once the time is up. Wait for a couple more minutes until the sponge is cool enough for you to use it.
  • Wipe the interior with the sponge and see how all the grime, slime, and dirt disappear in a matter of seconds.

Yes, it’s just that easy to clean your microwave. However, if your device tends to get dirty often, we recommend using a paper plate to cover the food when heating it. It’s one of those lifesaver hacks that make everything easier. You could also wipe the microwave every couple of days or whenever you heat something that splatters so that the grime won’t dry.
